Grab a roll of brown craft paper or butcher paper to make a template. You will need some type of tape, a marksolot/sharpie, and scissors.
Roll out the paper, tape it together, cut off the border shape and label.

First label Top. Then, label head, label foot, label port (left side of boat looking forward), label starboard (right side of boat looking forward.) Label diagonal corner to corner.

If not a rectangle, but rather forward, bow berths matching the curve of the bow, draw the entire border curve, connecting all border sides. Some mattresses sit in a space with 5 sides.
